About
Household light improved sharply in the 1780s, when Aimé Argand's oil lamp used a hollow wick and a glass chimney to burn brighter and cleaner. Kerosene lamps followed in the 19th century, and electricity freed the lamp from its fuel. Designers then explored two roles: the decorative lamp that glows, and the task lamp that aims.
Wilhelm Wagenfeld and Karl Jucker's glass and metal lamp (1924) became a Bauhaus emblem, and George Carwardine's spring-balanced Anglepoise (1932) set the pattern for adjustable desk lamps. In the 1920s and 1930s Jean Perzel made glass lamps that diffuse light evenly, and after the war Serge Mouille, Greta Magnusson Grossman and Murano glassmakers such as Carlo Nason gave the form new shapes. Look at the weight of the base, the material of the shade, the switch and whether the wiring is original.
