About
The sideboard grew out of the medieval cupboard, an open set of shelves for displaying plate. In late 18th-century Britain designers such as Robert Adam and Thomas Sheraton turned it into a serving table with drawers, cellarettes for wine and flanking pedestals. Victorian examples became massive, with carved and mirrored backs. Mid-century Danish makers slimmed it again into long teak cases with sliding doors and tambour fronts, and designers such as Peter Hvidt made them for mass production. Look at the matching of veneers across doors and the fittings inside.
