Artificial light shaped design long before electricity. Roman potters made small clay oil lamps by the thousand, and later centuries brought candlesticks, lanterns and brass chandeliers. Each new source then changed what a lamp could look like. Around 1900 Tiffany Studios wrapped electric bulbs in leaded-glass shades patterned like dragonflies and wisteria. After the war Milan firms such as Stilnovo and Gino Sarfatti's Arteluce treated lamps as minimal constructions, and Joe Colombo designed lights of moulded plastic. Tiny halogen bulbs let Richard Sapper balance a slim arm on a counterweight in the Tizio desk lamp (1972), and LEDs have since allowed thin, flat forms.
Architects and designers, among them Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Jean Royère, created lamps for their own interiors. When judging a lamp, look at how it controls glare, whether it throws light up, down or all round, and whether its wiring and fittings are original.
