About
Before electricity, candles and oil lamps stood on tall wooden or metal stands, known in France as torchères. Electric standard lamps followed in the late 19th century, and designers soon found two main tasks for them: bouncing light off the ceiling and aiming it at a book.
In the 1920s and 1930s, uplighters by Jean Perzel spread soft light from glass bowls, while Walter von Nessen in New York designed swing-arm reading lamps. Greta Magnusson Grossman's tilting Grasshopper lamp came in the late 1940s, and Serge Mouille gave his floor lamps jointed arms ending in black shells. Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni's Arco (1962) reached across a room from a marble base. More recently Fernando and Humberto Campana have woven lamps from unusual materials.
