About
Sconces began as wall brackets for candles, often with a polished brass or mirror-glass backplate that threw the flame's light back into the room. Eighteenth-century French makers cast them in gilt bronze as scrolling arms. With electricity, sconces were used to wash walls and corridors with gentle light. Post-war designers made them expressive: Murano houses such as Barovier & Toso and Alfredo Barbini shaped glass leaves and shells, and Robert Mathieu and Jacques Biny in France built adjustable metal wall lights. Look for signs that a candle sconce has been electrified.
