About
Hanging lights spread light across a room from above, out of reach. Mamluk glassmakers in 14th-century Syria and Egypt enamelled and gilded mosque lamps that hung on chains, and medieval European churches suspended iron crowns of candles. Electric light changed the rules from the 1880s, because a bulb, unlike a flame, can point down and sit inside a closed shade.
Designers then set about taming glare. Poul Henningsen stacked curved shades so no bare bulb shows, reaching a peak in the leaf-covered PH Artichoke (1958). George Nelson's Bubble lamps of the early 1950s sprayed plastic over a wire frame, Murano designers such as Carlo Nason blew coloured glass pendants, and Hans-Agne Jakobsson in Sweden softened light through thin wood and metal. Michael Anastassiades now works with brass rods and glass spheres. Look at how a fitting spreads its light and how it hangs, on chains, rods or a simple flex.
