About
Delegated art hands part of the making, or the performing, to someone other than the artist, and makes that handover part of the point. László Moholy-Nagy later claimed he had ordered enamel paintings from a sign factory by telephone in the early 1920s. Conceptual art built on the idea: from 1968 Sol LeWitt issued his wall drawings as written instructions for others to carry out, so the same work can be redrawn in many places by many hands.
Other artists delegate action to people. Yoko Ono's Cut Piece (1964) invited the audience to snip away her clothes with scissors, and in Rosario, Argentina, in 1968 Graciela Carnevale locked her opening-night visitors inside the exhibition space until the glass shopfront was broken. Christian Falsnaes gives spoken commands that turn viewers into performers. The critic Claire Bishop has called works that hire non-professionals to appear as themselves delegated performance.
