About
Diaristic art keeps a regular record of a life: what happened, who was there, how it felt. It favours series and intimacy over polish. Frida Kahlo filled a private journal with drawings and writing during the last decade of her life, and Peter Beard's diaries layered photographs, ink, clippings and sometimes blood into dense collaged pages.
Photography suits the habit. Nan Goldin photographed her friends, lovers and her own bruised face for years, and Sally Mann photographed her children through Virginia summers. Other artists made the calendar itself the structure. On Kawara's Today series, begun in 1966, consists of paintings of the date on which each was made; Tehching Hsieh punched a time clock every hour for a year in 1980–81; and Peter Dreher painted the same empty drinking glass thousands of times from 1974 in his series Day by Day Good Day.
