About
Newspapers, magazines, television and online feeds shape what people know, and artists treat them as material and target. Marshall McLuhan's claim in 1964 that ‘the medium is the message’ encouraged many to look at the channel as well as its content. Richard Hamilton reworked a press photograph of Mick Jagger handcuffed after a drugs arrest in Swingeing London 67 (1968–69), and Gerhard Richter painted blurred versions of press and police photographs in October 18, 1977 (1988).
Television drew sharp responses. The collective Ant Farm drove a modified Cadillac through a wall of burning TV sets in Media Burn (1975), and Dara Birnbaum cut a superhero's spinning transformation into a stuttering loop in Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman (1978–79). Martha Rosler collaged Vietnam war photographs into glossy home interiors in House Beautiful: Bringing the War Home (c. 1967–72), and Sarah Charlesworth's Modern History series stripped newspaper front pages down to their photographs.
