About
Modern Indian art took a new turn at independence. In 1947 the Progressive Artists' Group in Bombay, including F.N. Souza, S.H. Raza and M.F. Husain, set out to join international modernism with Indian subjects. From the 1970s artists linked to the art faculty at Baroda, such as Bhupen Khakhar and Gulammohammed Sheikh, brought back storytelling, popular imagery and everyday life.
Later artists work in every medium. Mrinalini Mukherjee knotted and dyed hemp fibre into organic sculptures. Nalini Malani combines video with turning, painted cylinders to cast shadow plays about violence, myth and women's lives. N.S. Harsha paints vast gatherings of small, precisely detailed figures, and Subodh Gupta assembles stainless steel utensils into large sculptures. Amar Kanwar's films and installations address conflict, ecology and justice, and Arpana Caur paints figures drawn from Sikh and Punjabi folk traditions. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, first held in 2012, added an international platform at home.
