About
In the 1980s a number of architects set out to unsettle the calm grids of modernism. Their buildings look pulled apart or caught mid-collapse: walls lean, volumes collide, roofs twist and structure is exposed. Sources ranged from Russian Constructivism of the 1920s to the philosophy of Jacques Derrida, and a 1988 exhibition in New York grouped them under a single label that most of them rejected.
Frank Gehry began by wrapping his own Santa Monica house in chain-link fencing and corrugated metal in 1978, and later clad the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (1997) in billowing titanium. Zaha Hadid's fire station for the Vitra campus in Weil am Rhein (1993) is a cluster of sharp concrete blades. Daniel Libeskind's Jewish Museum Berlin, opened in 2001, cuts through its zigzag plan with empty voids, and Bernard Tschumi scattered red follies across the Parc de la Villette in Paris.
