About
The label was invented by later art historians for artists active along the Danube, between Regensburg and Vienna, in roughly 1500–1540. They never shared a workshop, but they responded with the same excitement to the wooded, hilly country around them. Trees drip with moss, skies flare with sunset colour, and small human figures are often dwarfed by nature.
Lucas Cranach the Elder, in Vienna in the first years of the century, set saints and portraits in lush, dramatic scenery before he moved to Wittenberg. Albrecht Altdorfer of Regensburg went further. His Landscape with a Footbridge (around 1518–20) tells no story at all and is among the earliest independent landscape paintings in Europe, while The Battle of Alexander at Issus (1529) sets a vast battle beneath a curving, cosmic sky. Wolf Huber of Passau drew mountain views in pen, and Augustin Hirschvogel made some of the first landscape etchings.
