About
Trays are simple, but their surfaces invite decoration. In 18th-century Britain, silver salvers stood on small feet to present letters or glasses, and silversmiths such as Eliza Godfrey engraved them with borders and coats of arms. Workshops in Birmingham and Wolverhampton produced japanned tin and papier-mâché trays painted with flowers and landscapes in imitation of Asian lacquer, while Japanese makers lacquered wooden trays for serving food and tea.
Mid-century designers treated the tray as a small sculpture. Georges Jouve glazed ceramic trays in deep blacks and yellows, and Alexandre Noll carved them from solid wood. Jaydan Moore now cuts apart found silver-plated platters and rejoins them into new maps of memory. Look at the rim and handles, the underside for marks, and signs of wear from use.
