A door marks a threshold, and societies have long decorated the most important ones to say what lies beyond. Around 1015 Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim had a pair of bronze doors cast with scenes from Genesis and the life of Christ. In Florence, Lorenzo Ghiberti spent more than twenty years on gilded bronze doors for the Baptistery, finished in 1452 and later nicknamed the Gates of Paradise. In Yorubaland, the sculptor Olowe of Ise carved palace doors in deep relief in the early 20th century, and Auguste Rodin built a lifetime of figures into The Gates of Hell, begun in 1880.
Designers and furniture makers still treat doors as sculpture, carving, inlaying or casting them for particular buildings. Look at the hinges and hardware, how panels are framed against warping, and whether the door was made for a particular opening.
