About
A container is defined by what it keeps safe: food, incense, letters, medicine, relics or the tools of writing. Some cultures have lavished extraordinary skill on such objects. Japanese makers built lacquer writing boxes decorated in sprinkled gold, and in the 20th century bamboo weaving grew into a recognised art. The Tanabe family of Sakai has passed the craft through several generations named Chikuunsai, and Fujinuma Noboru was designated a Living National Treasure for his bamboo baskets. Metalworkers such as Osumi Yukie hammer silver boxes and vases and inlay them with fine lines, and Tamagawa Norio raises vessels from single sheets of copper.
In the United States, Edwin and Mary Scheier gave stoneware jars carved figures drawn from folk and ancient art. Look at the fit of the lid, the finish inside, where the maker's care often shows most, and how the form suits what it was meant to hold.
