Household objects are tested every day by the hand, which makes them a demanding field for designers. In 18th-century London silversmiths like Eliza Godfrey made tea caddies, cake baskets and candlesticks for polite rituals of tea and dining. Industry later filled kitchens with cast iron and enamelled steel. Jens Quistgaard's enamelled Kobenstyle casseroles (1955), whose lids double as trivets, carried Danish modernism from stove to table, and Michael Graves's playful kettles for Alessi brought Postmodernism into the kitchen. Jasper Morrison has argued that ordinary, well-made things do more for daily life than attention-seeking designs. Look at handles, balance, how parts are joined and whether the object still works as intended.
