The bowl is among the oldest vessels people make. In Song dynasty China, potters at Jian produced dark tea bowls with streaked hare's-fur glazes, treasured in Japan as tenmoku. In what is now New Mexico, Mimbres potters painted bowls with animals and figures around 1000–1150 and often placed them in burials. In the 20th century Gertrud and Otto Natzler threw eggshell-thin bowls in Los Angeles and covered them with cratered glazes, Axel Salto gave stoneware budding surfaces at Royal Copenhagen, Dino Martens pieced Murano glass like patchwork, and Alexandre Noll carved bowls from solid wood. Look at the foot, the thickness of the wall and how the glaze or grain behaves at the rim.
