About
Neolithic potters of the lower Danube modelled seated clay figures such as the so-called Thinker of Cernavodă, and Thracian goldsmiths in present-day Bulgaria made drinking vessels shaped as animal heads. Medieval Serbian monasteries such as Mileševa and Sopoćani hold frescoes of striking grace, and in Romania's Bukovina the outer walls of churches such as Voroneț were painted from top to bottom in the 16th century.
Socialist Yugoslavia allowed more freedom than its neighbours. In Zagreb, the EXAT 51 group, including Ivan Picelj, championed geometric abstraction, and the New Tendencies exhibitions from 1961 linked artists interested in optics and systems. Belgrade's Student Cultural Centre gave young artists such as Marina Abramović a stage in the 1970s, while Braco Dimitrijević enlarged portraits of anonymous passers-by. After the breakup of Yugoslavia, artists including Marjetica Potrč, Milica Tomić and David Maljković, and Albania's Anri Sala and Adrian Paci, have examined memory, borders and migration.
