About
The Taíno of the Greater Antilles carved stone and wooden zemís, three-pointed spirit figures, and ceremonial seats called duhos. Conquest, slavery and plantations then shaped the region, whose art draws on African, European, Asian and Indigenous sources. Camille Pissarro, born on St. Thomas in 1830, sketched island life before leaving for France.
In the 20th century each island took its own path. In Haiti, a Port-au-Prince art centre founded in 1944 encouraged self-taught painters such as Hector Hyppolite and Philomé Obin, who painted Vodou spirits and national history. Cuba's Wifredo Lam fused Afro-Cuban religion with Surrealism in The Jungle (1943), Edna Manley carved Jamaica's modern sculpture, and Olga Albizu painted luminous abstractions in Puerto Rico and New York. Trinidad's carnival costumes are an art in their own right, and artists such as Llewellyn Xavier of St. Lucia and Janine Antoni, raised in the Bahamas, work internationally.
