About
Before the Dutch Republic existed, the Low Countries were known for Netherlandish painting, and Hieronymus Bosch filled The Garden of Earthly Delights with strange creatures around 1500. After the northern provinces broke from Spain, the 17th century became a golden age for painting made for a wide middle class. Specialists produced still lifes, seascapes and tavern scenes, Rembrandt van Rijn staged a militia company in The Night Watch (1642), and Johannes Vermeer painted quiet rooms filled with soft daylight.
Vincent van Gogh began with dark peasant scenes such as The Potato Eaters (1885) before his colour exploded in France. In 1917 Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg and Gerrit Rietveld launched De Stijl, reducing art and furniture to straight lines and primary colours. After the Second World War, Karel Appel and the CoBrA group painted with childlike energy, and Rotterdam-born Willem de Kooning helped lead Abstract Expressionism in New York.
