About
As Edo, the shoguns' capital, the city supported a booming commercial culture, and its woodblock prints pictured the "floating world" of kabuki actors, teahouses and courtesans. Utagawa Kunisada turned out thousands of actor portraits, and Utagawa Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–58) caught bridges, rain and festivals across the city.
Renamed Tokyo in 1868, it became the centre of Japan's modern art schools, where painters such as Kuroda Seiki taught Western-style oil painting. After 1945 the city rebuilt at speed. Kenzo Tange's sweeping gymnasium for the 1964 Olympics made concrete sculptural. Designer Shiro Kuramata set real roses inside clear acrylic for his Miss Blanche chair (1988), and Toyo Ito designed light, open buildings in the city. Yayoi Kusama has worked in Tokyo since returning in 1973, and Takashi Murakami, born there, blends anime and Japanese painting.
