About
Brooklyn entered art history first as a subject. The Brooklyn Bridge, opened in 1883, became a modern emblem, and Joseph Stella painted its cables as soaring Gothic arches in the 1910s and 1920s. The borough was also where Jean-Michel Basquiat was born, in 1960.
From the 1980s, rising rents in Manhattan pushed artists across the East River. Williamsburg filled with studios in converted warehouses, and in later decades the pattern repeated in Dumbo, Red Hook, Gowanus and Bushwick. Brooklyn became home to a wide range of practices rather than a single style: Wangechi Mutu's collaged female figures, Lorna Simpson's pairings of photographs and text, and Tara Donovan's large installations built from masses of everyday materials all took shape in studios there.
