About
In generative art the artist designs a system of rules, code, machinery or natural process and then lets it produce the work with some independence. The result may be strictly ordered or full of surprise, and one system can yield endless variants.
Rule-based making is old, but the term took hold with computers in the 1960s. Herbert W. Franke and Vera Molnár wrote programs to vary lines and squares, and Manfred Mohr, who turned to algorithms in 1969, has explored the structure of the cube for decades. Channa Horwitz devised notation systems on graph paper from 1968. Hans Haacke's Condensation Cube (1963–65) lets water vapour draw its own changing pattern. Casey Reas co-created the programming environment Processing in 2001, and the Dutch duo Driessens & Verstappen evolve sculptural forms through software. The process matters as much as any single output.
