About
Interactive works need the audience to act, not just look: to touch, move, speak, take something away or trigger a response. Participation completes the piece, so no two encounters are alike.
In the 1960s artists handed control to the public. Yoko Ono invited audience members to cut away her clothing in Cut Piece (1964), and Lygia Pape's Divisor (1968) gathered dozens of people under one vast sheet, their heads poking through slits. In Rosario, Argentina, Graciela Carnevale locked an opening-night audience inside a room in 1968 to see how they would respond. In 1991 Félix González-Torres made a portrait of his partner Ross as a pile of sweets that visitors may take, its weight tied to an ideal body weight. Technology widened the possibilities: Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's Pulse Room (2006) makes hundreds of light bulbs flash in time with participants' heartbeats. Rules, sensors and invitations are the materials.
