Monumental sculpture dwarfs the human body, to honour gods and rulers or reshape a place.
Ancient Egyptians carved the Great Sphinx from bedrock at Giza, and in 8th-century China workers cut the Leshan Giant Buddha, over 70 metres tall, from a riverside cliff. The people of Rapa Nui quarried and moved hundreds of stone moai. Modern technology allowed new kinds of colossus: Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi's Liberty Enlightening the World (1886) is a thin copper skin hung on an iron frame engineered by Gustave Eiffel, and Vera Mukhina's stainless steel Worker and Kolkhoz Woman (1937) strode atop the Soviet pavilion in Paris. Maya Lin set a black granite wall into the ground for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1982), Walter De Maria arrayed 400 steel poles across a New Mexico plain in The Lightning Field (1977), and Anish Kapoor's mirrored Cloud Gate (2006) reflects Chicago's skyline.
