About
Large-scale photographs are printed big enough to confront a viewer at the size of a painting or larger. Scale once depended on the camera itself: in 1861 Carleton Watkins carried a camera taking glass plates of roughly 46 by 56 centimetres into Yosemite for his mammoth-plate views. In the 1930s photomurals stretched images across the walls of exhibitions and public buildings.
From the late 1970s larger colour papers and enlargers, and face-mounting behind acrylic, allowed prints several metres wide. Jeff Wall presented staged scenes as backlit transparencies, and from the late 1980s Thomas Struth photographed crowds looking at paintings at close to life size. Andreas Gursky's 99 Cent (1999) turns supermarket shelves into an all-over field of colour, and Richard Learoyd makes unique, detailed prints straight from a room-sized camera. Look from two distances: the overall composition from afar, then the density of information up close.
