About
Photography travelled almost as soon as it was invented. In the late 1850s Francis Frith hauled glass plates, chemicals and a portable darkroom up the Nile to photograph temples and pyramids, and Samuel Bourne spent the 1860s making views of the Himalayas and Indian cities. Sold at home in books and albums, their prints often carry the outlook of empire as much as the look of the places shown.
Smaller cameras changed the tone in the 20th century. Werner Bischof photographed famine in India and daily life in Japan for Magnum in the early 1950s. Alex Webb works in dense, saturated colour, layering figures and shadows in the streets of the Caribbean and Latin America. Sebastião Salgado spent years on black-and-white projects about labour, migration and remote places, among them Genesis (2004–11). Steve McCurry's vivid portraits and Fazal Sheikh's quiet collaborations with refugee communities show the range of the form.
