Emerging Art

About

'Emerging' describes where an artist stands in a career rather than a style or medium. It usually covers artists within a decade or so of leaving art school, along with older artists whose work has only recently reached a wider public. The work itself can take any form: painting, installation, video, performance or hybrids still without a name.

Every generation has had its newcomers; the Impressionists staged their own exhibition in 1874 after years of rejection by the official Salon. Today early careers are shaped by residencies, degree shows, prizes, biennials and artist-run spaces. Artists linked with the label in recent years include Derrick Adams, who paints and collages scenes of Black leisure and self-presentation; Gina Beavers, who turns social-media photographs of food and make-up into thickly built relief paintings; and Dineo Seshee Bopape, who makes installations from soil, clay, light and sound.
