About
Artists began using photographs almost as soon as they existed. Eugène Delacroix worked from photographs of nude models made with Eugène Durieu in the 1850s, and Walter Sickert, late in his career, painted from newspaper photographs and film stills, sometimes squaring them up openly on the canvas.
From the 1960s the source became part of the subject. Gerhard Richter painted from newspaper pictures and family snapshots, blurring them so they still read as photographs, and Andy Warhol screenprinted press images directly. Chuck Close gridded his own portrait photographs into huge heads, and Marlene Dumas and Luc Tuymans have taken press images and film stills as starting points for paintings about violence, memory and power. Look for the camera's habits carried into paint: abrupt cropping, flash glare, shallow focus, motion blur and the flatness of a printed reproduction.
