About
Pouring hands part of the work to gravity, viscosity and chance. In 1936 David Alfaro Siqueiros ran an experimental workshop in New York where participants, the young Jackson Pollock among them, spilled and dripped new industrial lacquers. Pollock developed that freedom into the drip paintings of 1947–50, laying canvas on the floor and letting enamel fall from sticks and cans. The Japanese Gutai artist Sadamasa Motonaga poured enamel into pooling shapes in the late 1950s.
Helen Frankenthaler thinned paint and poured it onto unprimed canvas in Mountains and Sea (1952), so colour soaked in like a stain. Paul Jenkins guided poured veils by tilting the canvas. Ian Davenport has released lines of paint down tilted surfaces, and Holton Rower pours colours onto stacked forms so they spread into rings. Look for pooled edges, soaked halos, marbling where colours meet and runs that show which way a work lay while wet.
