About
Photomontage joins fragments of different photographs into one image, making connections no camera could record. Victorian photographers combined negatives for sentimental tableaux, and early 20th-century postcards set real heads on comic bodies, but the modern form took shape in Berlin around 1918–19. Hannah Höch's Cut with the Kitchen Knife Dada through the Last Weimar Beer-Belly Cultural Epoch of Germany (1919–20) packs politicians, machines and dancers into a whirling satire.
In the Soviet Union, Gustav Klutsis and Valentina Kulagina built campaign posters from montaged crowds and workers. John Heartfield turned the technique against Nazism in covers for the magazine AIZ during the 1930s. Later artists aimed it at consumer culture and war, as in Martha Rosler's House Beautiful: Bringing the War Home (c. 1967–72), which dropped Vietnam images into glossy magazine interiors. Look for mismatched scale, lighting and grain where pieces meet, and for cut edges left deliberately visible.
