About
Armando, Jan Henderikse, Henk Peeters and Jan Schoonhoven had shown together as an informal group since 1958 before adopting the name Nul, Dutch for zero, around 1961. The word signalled a clean start after the expressive abstraction of the 1950s: they wanted art without the artist's handwriting, made from repetition, series and things taken as they are. They worked closely with the ZERO artists of Düsseldorf and with Piero Manzoni.
The work is quiet, often white. Schoonhoven glued paper and cardboard into shallow white reliefs of repeated cells; Peeters used cotton wool, feathers, water sealed in plastic and even fire; Armando fixed rows of steel bolts to painted grounds; Henderikse set bottle caps, coins and other found things into regular grids. The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam gave the international circle around Nul and ZERO major exhibitions in 1962 and 1965, and the Dutch group broke up in 1966.
