About
London drew foreign talent long before it bred its own. Hans Holbein the Younger painted Henry VIII's court, and Anthony van Dyck became principal painter to Charles I in 1632. In the 18th century William Hogarth sold engraved moral tales such as A Rake's Progress. J. M. W. Turner dissolved the Thames into light and steam, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood formed in the city in 1848.
The American-born James Abbott McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent both kept studios in Chelsea, and Whistler sued the critic John Ruskin in 1878 over a painting of fireworks. After 1945, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud made the human figure raw and heavy with paint, and Anthony Caro welded brightly painted steel into floor-bound sculpture. In the late 1980s Damien Hirst and his peers, the Young British Artists, emerged from student shows in the city.
