About
Conceptual artists today rarely limit themselves to the typed pages of the 1960s. The idea still comes first, but it may be carried by a car, a crowd, a re-enactment or a conversation.
Gabriel Orozco cut a Citroën DS lengthwise, removed a central strip and rejoined it as a narrow, impossible car in La DS (1993). Ilya Kabakov, later working with Emilia Kabakov, built whole rooms around fictional Soviet characters, as in The Man Who Flew into Space from His Apartment (1985). Jeremy Deller restaged a 1984 clash between striking miners and police, with former participants, in The Battle of Orgreave (2001). Tania Bruguera set up an open microphone in Havana in 2009 and gave each speaker one minute. Francis Alÿs had hundreds of volunteers shift a sand dune outside Lima by a few centimetres. Look for the premise: a rule, question or action that fits in a sentence.
