About
The feminist art movement of the early 1970s set the terms: collective workshops, performance, craft materials once dismissed as domestic, and a demand to treat women's experience as a serious subject. At Womanhouse (1972) in Los Angeles, Faith Wilding performed Waiting, a monologue on a woman's life spent waiting for things to happen. Suzanne Lacy mapped reported rapes across Los Angeles in Three Weeks in May (1977).
Later artists widened the questions to race, migration, sexuality and class. Mona Hatoum's video Measures of Distance (1988) overlays letters from her mother in Beirut on intimate images of her. Karen Finley's raw monologues made her a target in the American culture wars of 1990. Tomoko Sawada photographs herself in hundreds of guises to probe how women are typed by appearance. Linda Vallejo reworks familiar images from a Chicana perspective. Look for the body as evidence and humour turned against stereotypes.
