About
As art schools in the later 20th century largely stopped teaching drawing from plaster casts and the live model, a network of independent ateliers revived it. The New York Academy of Art opened in 1982 and the Florence Academy of Art in 1991, and many smaller studios followed, often requiring long periods of drawing before students paint.
The method draws directly on 19th-century practice. Students copy the lithographed plates of Charles Bargue's drawing course, which Vincent van Gogh also used, draw casts by the sight-size method, study anatomy and build oil paintings in stages from a monochrome underpainting to glazed colour. The finished work aims at convincing form, subtle edges and controlled light. Subjects remain portrait, nude, still life and landscape. Daniel Greene became known for pastel and oil portraits, Robert Bateman for wildlife, and Max Ferguson for precise New York interiors and street scenes.
