About
A cityscape shows a town or city whole, or a broad stretch of it, seen from a distance or from above. Printed views helped define the genre, as in the woodcut panoramas of the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493). El Greco turned his adopted city into a storm-lit vision in View of Toledo (c. 1596–1600), while Johannes Vermeer's View of Delft (c. 1660–61) is a calm portrait of brick, water and passing cloud.
In 18th-century Venice, Canaletto painted exact views of canals and squares, and in Japan Utagawa Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–58) framed the city through bold close-ups and changing seasons. John Atkinson Grimshaw painted the moonlit docks of Liverpool, and Georgia O'Keeffe gave the skyscraper night-time glamour in Radiator Building—Night, New York (1927). Photographers such as Gabriele Basilico and Olivo Barbieri have surveyed cities scarred by war or seen from helicopters.
