About
Bedrooms and bathrooms are where people sleep, wash, make love, fall ill and are alone, so pictures of them can feel like trespass or confession. Renaissance painters used the bedchamber for sacred events: Vittore Carpaccio's The Dream of Saint Ursula (1495) shows the saint asleep in a tidy Venetian room as an angel enters.
Later the room itself became the story. Vincent van Gogh painted The Bedroom (1888) in Arles in flat, bright colour meant to suggest rest, and Pierre Bonnard returned for years to his wife Marthe lying in the tub, the tiles shimmering around her. Photographers made intimacy documentary: Nan Goldin's slideshow The Ballad of Sexual Dependency moves through unmade beds and bathroom mirrors, and JeongMee Yoon arranges children among their pink or blue possessions. Tracey Emin's My Bed (1998) brought the real thing, stains and empty bottles included, before the public.
