About
Typography in the West began with movable metal type. Johannes Gutenberg's workshop in Mainz printed its Bible around 1455 in a dense blackletter modelled on handwriting, and within decades Venetian printers such as Nicolas Jenson and Aldus Manutius introduced clearer roman and italic letters. Claude Garamond, John Baskerville and Giambattista Bodoni refined contrast and proportion over the following centuries.
Modernism rebuilt the page. Futurist and Dada poets scattered letters of different sizes across it; at the Bauhaus Herbert Bayer designed a universal alphabet without capitals (1925); Jan Tschichold's The New Typography (1928) argued for asymmetry and sans serifs. Swiss designers after the war favoured strict grids and faces such as Helvetica (1957), which Massimo Vignelli applied to corporate identities and transport signage. Artists took up type too: Ed Ruscha paints words in a lettering style of his own, and Barbara Kruger sets slogans in white Futura on red bars.
