About
Animation makes still images appear to move by showing them in quick succession, each frame changed slightly from the last. Optical toys such as the phenakistoscope and zoetrope did this in the 1830s, and Émile Reynaud projected hand-painted moving pictures to Paris audiences from 1892. Cinema then took the idea further: Winsor McCay's Gertie the Dinosaur (1914) gave a drawn character a personality, and Lotte Reiniger cut paper silhouettes for The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926).
Artists have used every method since, from painted cels and stop-motion puppets to clay and computer graphics. Oskar Fischinger and Norman McLaren pursued abstract rhythms of colour and sound. William Kentridge films a single charcoal drawing as he erases and redraws it, so ghostly traces of earlier states remain, as in Felix in Exile (1994). Qiu Anxiong animates the look of ink painting, and Cao Fei builds whole cities in virtual worlds.
