About
Books and portfolios gather images into a set meant to be seen in order or kept together. A bound book fixes the sequence of its pages; a portfolio usually holds loose prints, drawings or photographs in a folder, wrapper or case, often with a title page and a colophon recording the edition.
Albrecht Dürer published his woodcut Apocalypse (1498) as a book with text, and Francisco de Goya issued the eighty etchings of Los Caprichos (1799) as one series. In the 20th century publishers commissioned painters to create whole illustrated volumes, such as Henri Matisse's Jazz (1947). Edward S. Curtis paired the text volumes of The North American Indian with large portfolios of photogravures, and Josef Albers issued his colour studies as plates in Interaction of Color (1963). Arthur Szyk's illuminated Haggadah (1940) and Chris Ware's intricately designed comics treat the book as a unified work.
