About
Isolating a single object changes how we see it. Stripped of setting and story, an ordinary thing becomes a study in shape, surface and light. Francisco de Zurbarán's small Cup of Water and a Rose (about 1630) gives a cup on a silver plate the stillness of a devotional image, and Pierre-Joseph Redouté's botanical watercolours of the early 19th century present one bloom against bare paper.
Photography sharpened the approach. Edward Weston's Pepper No. 30 (1930) turns a vegetable into something like sculpture, and Karl Blossfeldt's close-ups of plant forms, published in 1928, read like architecture. In sculpture, Robert Gober has remade sinks, legs and other everyday things as meticulous handmade replicas, each presented on its own. Look for plain backgrounds, centred placement and lighting that describes every contour.
