By 1500, Antwerp had become northern Europe's busiest port, and its painters answered demand from merchants and churches. Quentin Metsys's The Moneylender and His Wife (1514) pairs coins and scales with a prayer book, and Frans Floris and Otto van Veen brought Italian lessons home; van Veen trained the young Peter Paul Rubens. Flemish specialists later perfected flower pieces and wooded landscapes, while Brussels and Oudenaarde workshops wove tapestries for courts across Europe.

In the early 20th century, Flemish Expressionists such as Constant Permeke painted heavy, earth-toned peasants and fishermen. Luxembourg, a small grand duchy, produced the photographer Edward Steichen, born there in 1879, and in recent decades the painter Michel Majerus, who mixed pop imagery and abstraction before his death in 2002. Su-Mei Tse, who works with sound, video and still images, won the Golden Lion for the Luxembourg pavilion at the 2003 Venice Biennale.
