A tiger shark suspended in a tank of formaldehyde, Damien Hirst's The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991), became the emblem of British artists emerging around 1990. Many had studied at Goldsmiths College in London, where tutors such as Michael Craig-Martin encouraged conceptual thinking over specialising in one medium. In 1988 Hirst, still a student, organised Freeze, a show of his contemporaries in an empty Docklands building.
The work drew on everyday materials, the body, sex and death, often with an autobiographical edge. Sarah Lucas made sculptures from food, furniture and tabloid pages; Marc Quinn cast his head in his own frozen blood for Self (1991); Rachel Whiteread cast the inside of a condemned East London house in concrete for House (1993); Tracey Emin exhibited her unmade bed. The Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1997 fixed the group in public view.
