About
Abstraction-Création formed in Paris in 1931, when abstract art was under pressure from two sides: Surrealism dominated the avant-garde, and governments in Germany and the Soviet Union were turning against non-figurative work. Auguste Herbin and Georges Vantongerloo led the group, which drew in members of the earlier Cercle et Carré and the circle of Theo van Doesburg, who died that year.
It was less a style than an open meeting ground. Membership grew to several hundred and ranged from the strict geometry of Piet Mondrian and Jean Hélion to the organic forms of Hans Arp and the suspended shapes of Alexander Calder. Wassily Kandinsky, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson also took part. The association published an annual, Abstraction-Création: Art non figuratif (1932–36), and held exhibitions before breaking up in the later 1930s. Its contacts helped carry geometric abstraction to London, New York and beyond.
