About
Punk arrived in the mid-1970s as a sound and an attitude, and its visual culture was built with scissors, glue and photocopiers. Fanzines such as Sniffin' Glue (1976), produced in London by Mark Perry, set the tone: quick, rough and handmade. Jamie Reid's sleeve for the Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen (1977) pasted ransom-note lettering across a portrait of the monarch, and Linder Sterling's photomontage for Buzzcocks' Orgasm Addict (1977) gave a naked woman an iron in place of a head.
Clothing made the same argument. Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren dressed their circle in ripped T-shirts, safety pins and bondage trousers from their King's Road shop. In California, Raymond Pettibon drew the four-bar logo and inky flyers for the band Black Flag, and Frank Kozik later screenprinted lurid gig posters in Texas. Look for torn edges, cut-out letters, grainy photocopy tones and a deliberate refusal of polish.
