About
The sky beyond the atmosphere has drawn artists since telescopes first reached it. Galileo Galilei made ink-wash studies of the Moon's cratered face in 1609 and printed versions of them in Sidereus Nuncius (1610), and Adam Elsheimer's small The Flight into Egypt (1609) shows the Milky Way resolved into countless stars. Astronomers such as Max Wolf later turned cameras on the heavens and found hundreds of asteroids on photographic plates.
The Space Age made the subject public. Chesley Bonestell's paintings of rockets and planetary surfaces, published from the 1940s, shaped how a generation imagined space travel. On Apollo 11 in 1969 Neil Armstrong photographed Buzz Aldrin standing on the Moon, and NASA invited artists including Robert Rauschenberg to watch the launch; his Stoned Moon lithographs (1969–70) followed. Vija Celmins has since rendered star fields and galaxies with painstaking precision in graphite and oil.
