About
The period runs roughly from the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1874 to the mid-20th century. It began with a break from the academy: Édouard Manet's flat, frank Olympia (1863) and the Impressionists' outdoor studies showed that painting could describe modern life in an openly visible way.
A rapid chain of movements followed. Post-Impressionists such as Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin gave colour and structure new weight, and Edvard Munch turned emotion into image. After 1900 came Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism and Dada, then Surrealism in the 1920s, in which René Magritte and Joan Miró explored dreams and chance. Marc Chagall painted memories of Jewish village life that float free of gravity, Käthe Kollwitz made prints of grief and poverty, Auguste Rodin reshaped sculpture, and Georgia O'Keeffe painted enlarged flowers and New Mexico hills. Abstract Expressionism in New York is often taken as the period's close.
