Marc Chagall

Painter from Vitebsk who filled his canvases with floating lovers, fiddlers and village roofs remembered from a Jewish childhood.
Marc Chagall was born in 1887 near Vitebsk, in what is now Belarus, studied in St Petersburg under Léon Bakst, and arrived in Paris in 1910. At La Ruche he joined the fractured space of Cubism and the colour of the Fauves to memories of home, as in I and the Village (1911). Back in Russia during the war, he founded an art school in Vitebsk, brought in El Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich to teach, and left in 1920 when Malevich's abstraction won over the students.
He settled in France in 1923, spent the Second World War in New York, and later turned to stained glass, for the cathedrals of Metz and Reims and the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem, and to the ceiling of the Paris Opéra (1964). He died in 1985. His work is in copyright, so none of it is offered here.
