About
Stories of leaving home run deep in European art. Masaccio's Expulsion from the Garden of Eden (c. 1425) and countless versions of the Flight into Egypt turned exile into sacred drama. By the 19th century the subject had become contemporary: Ford Madox Brown's The Last of England (1852–55) shows a couple sailing for Australia with set, weathered faces, and Alfred Stieglitz's photograph The Steerage (1907) looks down on passengers packed onto a liner's lower decks.
Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother (1936) put a face to Depression-era farm workers on the road, and Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series (1940–41) told the exodus of Black Americans out of the South in spare, flat colour. Recent artists often trace routes and borders. Bouchra Khalili's The Mapping Journey Project (2008–11) films migrants drawing their journeys on maps, and Do Ho Suh sews translucent fabric replicas of the homes he has left behind.
